Mayor of London visits Mr. Watson's classroom to speak about money$$$
Mayor Patrick Closser made a visit to every 6th Grade Government Class at London Middle School on Tuesday November 19th. All seven of Mr. Watson's classes are studying elections and political parties. Each class currently runs their own government with Mayors, Vice Mayors and other positions. They have to run a successful City and they compete against the other classes to run the most effective and efficient communities.
Mayor Closser took the day to speak to all the classes about his elections, his political party affiliation, the thought process of picking a party as well as making decisions and the steps he took to run successful campaigns. Each student will have to join one of four fictitious Political Parties created by the Teacher by weighing the pros and cons of each party. The Mayor explained his thought process on how he makes decisions and how his process can be implemented into everyday life.
Attached is a picture, MOLO Selfie, of Mr. Watson's 8th period class, Donutville, which is ran by Mayor Tate Wilson and Vice Mayor Riley Kohn.

London mayor Patrick Closser spent Friday with the entire London Middle School sixth grade class talking about government and civilizations. Social studies teacher Joe Watson’s classes are currently exploring the intricacies of government by setting up their own simulated civilizations. Closser and Watson lectured on the mechanics of government, and how to efficiently problem solve issues of governance that might arise.
Cities
I believe that hands on learning will stay with the student longer than just reading from a book and taking notes. For citizenship and government in my classes, I have a mayor election, where students that want to run for mayor will create a poster and a speech explaining why they want to be mayor. The entire class then takes notes and votes for the new mayor. After the election, the newly appointed mayor names the city, and I (Governor Watson) must approve of it, then that classroom is transformed into a city. The runner up in the election will automatically become the vice mayor. After that I pass out my job applications to anyone interested and they must apply for the available jobs. The mayor and I collect each application and hire workers for each position. Then we have our city council and they all have different tasks to be carried out every day in my class. They learn about many different applicable life, school, social, and citizenship lessons while actually doing these jobs. I have pictures below of the various workers, their jobs, and their respective cities that they belong to, enjoy. The jobs are; Mayor, Vice Mayor, Chief of Police, Deputy, Administrative Assistant, Parks & Rec, City Manager, and City Director.
WOrkers for each city
Interviews
After filling out a job application, each candidate was subjected to an intense interview process conducted by the mayor and commissioner of each city. It was a huge success. Thanks to all involved. I was completely impressed with the professionalism of every candidate and interviewer.
